Most people tend to miss the warning signs that their relationship is going downhill because they get too caught up in their feelings and go into a state of denial. This denial only makes things worse if you are dealing with an abuser or a manipulating control freak; it makes them stronger. They develop a sense of power because they feel they have you under their control. You need to learn how to combat a bad relationship.
